About Ed Gein

Everyone is wearing a mask. A single person has thousands of masks for every moment. One changes the mask according to the situation and the people around them. And it is tough to distinguish the real character of a person. The masks not only make the other people recognize the person but also can create a problem to find the real self. This can also create the hurdles in finding the real target of the person and sometimes it can create confusion.

Moreover, this mask tends to be the behaviour that you show to the people around in order to leave the imprint of the desired image in their minds. These kinds of people know how to manipulate people and do their work without showing my harm to others. Likewise, most of the normal people were such masks in order to appear like a sophisticated. Ed was able to wear the mask of an innocent for about 50 years before people and police identified him as a criminal. People know him as the “Butcher of Plainfield.” He was a murderer and body abductor. The murder had inspired the great psychological thriller movies like “Psycho”(1960), ” Deranged” (1974), and “Ed Gien: The Butcher of Plainfield” (2007).

Early life

Augusta Wilhelmine Gein gave birth to Ed in A Crosse Country, Wisconsin, the USA on 27 August 1906. His father was George Philip Gein. Ed had an elder brother called Henry George Gein. He had migrated along with his family to Plainfield, Wisconsin. Ed had a lonely childhood. He used to leave his home only for school.

Moreover, Ed was not good at social skills. He was a shy boy. He used to face bullying often. According to his teachers, Ed had queer mannerisms including random laughter.

Ed Gein

Ed Gein mother, Augusta, was a passionate follower of Lutheranism. She used to share her knowledge with Ed and his elder brother. Sins of carnal desire and drinking, the inborn immorality of the world, etc were some of her topics for sharing the knowledge. Augusta didn’t like any influence of others on her children hence didn’t allow contact with outsiders.

Ed lost his father when he was 34 years old, in 1940. He died because of heart failure due to alcoholism. The loss of his father compiled the two brothers to find jobs. They started seeking odd jobs in the neighbourhood. Ed worked as a baby sitter and a handyman. These jobs were safe in the neighbourhood.

The brothers started to face “siblings rivalry.” It is a psychological tendency developed between siblings which are quite natural in little amount. In this tendency, an elder sibling is jealous of the smaller one thinking that he/she has taken away his parents and his/her love. This tendency if not properly controlled at the beginning of childhood can create a lot of problems in the life of siblings.

Ed Gein was very close to his mother. This developed “sibling rivalry” in Henry. And Henry started opposing the views of his mother.

There was a severe incident on their farm. Ed Gein and his brother went to extinguish the fire on their farm on May 16, 1944. But they were separated in the dusk and Henry was missing. Later, Henry was found dead with the bruises on his head. But the autopsies declared the death as a cause of asphyxiation.

But it is not easy for a mother to bear the loss of her child. Likewise, she started getting strokes after the incident time and again. And Ed has devoted his full time to care for his mother. He neither dated nor meet any woman. Unfortunately, his mother left him alone in the world on 29 December 1945.

Then, he shifted to a room close to the kitchen which his mother had used. And Ed secured his mother’s room. In order to pass his time alone in the home, he started reading death-cult magazines and adventure stories based on cannibalism and Nazi cruelty.

Career (Crime Life)

After being alone in the home, Ed Gein started doing odd jobs for covering his expenses. The federal government started giving him farm subsidy since 1951. He used to work as a crop thresher or crew of municipality in certain intervals of time. Ed even sold 80 acres of land. His brother Henry had owned the land.

Then 6 years later, people got suspicious regarding Ed Gein after the disappearance of a clerk named Bernice Worden in Plainfield. It was on 16 November 1957. Police suspected him because he was the last person to purchase goods from the store. Hence, the police began an investigation. During the course of investigating his house, they were shocked by horrific findings. They found the beheaded body of Bernice that was suspending upside down with a crossbar bar at her ankles and doors on her wrists. The police found that the body was mangled after shot with a rifle.

After the search of his house, police found really disturbing images. Skulls used as bowls, human skin used as chair covers and lampshades, socks from human skin, a belt made up of human nipples, human skulls on bed corner posts, and collected female genitals and noses were some of the horrifying articles.

Ed Gein admitted that he visited local graveyards to get the raw materials for the articles. He used to dig up the woman’s body and use their flesh to make the objects during the night. He disagreed of having intercourse with the body’s reasoning that the body smelled very bad. He even tried to create a suit with human skin after the death of his mother.

Moreover, he also admitted murdering Mary Hogan. She had been missing since 1954. But couldn’t recall the incident. He was medically unfit to get punishment from the court. As a result, he was sent to “Central State Hospital”, in Waupun, Wisconsin. But later, his treatment continued in ” Mendota State Hospital” in Madison, Wisconsin. After the doctor declared him fit in 1968, he got the punishment of life imprisonment but not guilty due to his mental instability.
