Leonard Cohen’s death is a cold and broken loss to the music world.
Cohen’s passing was announced Thursday evening through a statement on his Facebook page written by Sony Music Canada.
“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away,” the post said. “We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.”
The Canadian native was a poetic lyricist best known for his iconic song, “Hallelujah.” Over the course of his career, Cohen released a total of 15 studio albums. He dropped his most recent record, You Want It Darker just last month.
Many inspired by the late artist, from J.K. Rowling and Justin Timberlake, took to Twitter to grieve and share their condolences.
We have lost a great songwriter… One capable of hypnotizing his listeners simply by the words from his mind and mouth. #LeonardCohen
